My list would run off the page, being the broken down old fart that I am. However, most recently I flew an ERJ 145 from MIA to RIC (Richmond, Virginia). I can only say that I don't give a flying flatus if the airlines are hemhorraging red ink on fuel costs or not - two hours and fifteen minutes in one of those wretched hard, narrow commuter seats is just too damned long. My backside felt like it had been squeezed in a vise, the seat pitch seemed designed for midgets and I just about had to do a Sumo retraction of the family jewels to keep from sterilizing myself, and there's no seat recline to speak of. Now the ERJ is a definite improvement over a Saab or Jetstream for a short trip - an hour or less. It's the same miserable chair going half again as fast. However, the growing tendency of the airlines to substitute commuter jets on trunk routes is not going to help their customer relations problem any. With my son and grandchildren living in Richmond, I will surely be flying there often. Speaking for myself, I'm switching from AA (my key loyalty program carrier) to Delta out of FLL for the Richmond route until AA puts an MD-80 or 737 on it. As it turned out, there was no convenient departure or sane routing home from Richmond a few days later so I booked an AA 737-800 out of DC instead. Brother, what a difference; more than worth the drive. |

Like Rick, I am getting on in years, and the list would be quite long, even if I could remember them all, I do remember that my first aircraft was a Dakota out of Blackpool,(Squires Gate) over half a century ago, and the list would include BEA Viscount, BEA Comet, Air France Caravelle, BA 777s and 747, and of course BA Concorde. There would also be a number of Military aircraft, including Hercules, Canberra, Victor, and quite a few hours in a Lancaster. Robin. |

Hi Rick, can't say that I do, don't get down to that neck of the woods much. Must agree with you on the 737-888, flew from London to Paris not long ago on a Brit Midland, quite nice, however, do not like the 777, have flown several times to Saudi Arabia on BA, not happy with the leg room and the air conditioning, five and a half hours breathing everyones germs is not my scene. Some European Jets when I was young, mainly Lufthansa and BA (We lived in Germany and got free flights to the U.K. whenever we wanted from work) so 737s, A320s possibly. Tristar Caledonian Airlines to Kenya, Can't remember too much apart from 7 hour delay DC-10-30 JMC/Caledonian to Antigua (they were changing over at that time, we were on the first flight with the DC-10 in JMC Colours, but everything was Branded 'Caledonian Airlines' B737-800 Ryanair to Turin, that was horrible despite the fact that it was before the airline did away with things like tray tables and window blinds! BAe 146 Air France/British European to Toulouse Blangac. Very cramped and the bins were tiny! B757-200 Monarch to Turin O.K. but no legroom At Christmas BA 767-300ER to the Cayman Islands and AeroCarribean ATR (I think) from Cayman to Cuba! All flights from London Gatwick bar Ryanair from Stanstead and Air France and BA from Heathrow. On the go: |

Robin: I guess I'm not being entirely kosher in my selections - I almost always fly the AA 777 in business class. That's not because I like to throw money around but because, if you're a "gold" or "platinum" level AAdvantage mileage program member with a million or more miles under your belt, you automatically get assigned to the business-class seats when you buy a coach ticket on 777 on an AA domestic flight and have such liberal and inexpensive upgrade options on international flights. Nonetheless, AA put huge overhead compartments in all their 777s so I almost never have to check baggage - which is a joy if your home port is MIA, with arguably the worst baggage service in the first world. I would however like to take just a moment here once again to vomit vitriol at all those airlines who have replaced MD80s and 737s with ERJs and CRJs on long routes. A pox on all your hangars, and may your coffins be so narrow that you have to be buried sideways. |

I don't remember the first ones I was on as I was too little to remember, but I know they were Iberia. Dehavlin Comet B707 B727 B757 B737 B747 DC8 Air Afrique ( Tenerife to Madrid) DC-9 C-47 (COntinental Vientian Laos to Udorn RTAFB Thailand) Uh-1B Air America, Vientian Laos to Udorn RTAFB Thailand) Tu 104 Aeroflot Moscow to Lenningrad Caravell Electra Royal Air Lao C-123 Provider (Air America) Caribou (Air America) A320 Fokker F-27 Piper Navajo Skywest (Las Vegas NV to Cedar City UT) This what I remember. THe Air America ventures were when I was a kid. I was a year in Laos as my Dad's job. At the time didn't know the link to the CIA owned airline, but was tremendous fun. The comet ride was when I was about six I'm guesting. The Aeroflot trip was on a school field trip when I was in high school living on Rome Italy. Lot's of fun living overseas. Posting these brings back fond memories. Thanks for the thread and the diversion. Neil |

Quote LOL! :p I just saw your comment and I have to agree 110%! The ERJ-135 I flew from Memphis to Nashville was a real Turkey! Basic transportation only! They put me in the tail by the engines and it was so damn loud it would make the fillings in your teeth VIBRATE! Lucky I didn't have far to go in that crate! About the only thing good I can say about it was that it was fast. <S>! JESTER |

Jester - No kiddin' bubba. You want to replace a Saab 340 or a Beech 99 or even a Metro III with one of those cramped little gutbuckets, be my guest! Get me to San Angelo from DFW in under 50 minutes and you will be loved. But take a 737 off the Denver-BWI run and cram me into one of them Brazilian lawn darts, well, I jus' be takin me custoom elsewhere, mon. Incidentally, flew ISP to FLL this morning on Southwest, which is always pretty basic but also always amusing. Best typical Southwest flight attendant's crackpot announcement of the day: "We know you have a choice when flying, so the next time you get an urge to pack yourself into a pressurized aluminum tube and hopscotch your way across the country at 535 miles per hour, we hope you will choose Southwest. Okay, now get out!" They're a hoot on that airline. Oh if only they had a first-class cabin.... |

My first was in 69 when I was 14: VIE-FRA LH 737 FRA-ORY LH 727 then to Bordeaux with Air Inter Caravelle. My craziest was choosen by my company to get from Vienna, Austria to Wooster, Ohio: Vienna-Zurich-Luxemburg-Rekjavik-WashingtonDC-Cleeveland. It took some 22 hrs + 2 hrs night trip in rented car arriving approx. 3 AM and 2-day meeting starting just in the morning. MD-80 I suppose OS or SR, Saab 2000 Crossair, Icelandair 757 interrrupted hop over the Atlantic and some MD-tube to Cleeveland. The way back was not better! The best ones where when I flew myself in gliders: Bergfalke, Grunau Baby, Ka 8, Sf 25 and - you wont believe - SG 38 ! Over the last years there were a lot of MD-80's (I love them!) OS, SR A320/321 OS, LH, AF, Niki A310 OS 737-xxx Lauda, SkyEurope, LH, KLM Fokker 70 & 100 OS Dash-7&8 Tyrolean CRJ's Austrian, Lauda, LH ATR's of TAT Saab 340 & 2k Crossair BAE 146 Crossair, LH Before 9-11 I often managed to get on the jump seat. So beyond the most beautifoul moments were views from the cockpit : diving down between the snowy mountings to Innsbruck (Dash-7) high over NY at night (757) turning very short into VIE with a hot stick of a former fighter pilot (737) may friends birthday gift last year for my 50th (jump seat Vienna to Hamburg and back) greetings flying is not dangerous, crashing is dangerous |
