What airline operated ALL of these aircraft types AT THE SAME TIME during the
mid 1960s:

Lockheed L-188A Electra
Sud Caravelle
Boeing 707-300
Boeing 707-400
Convair CV-990A
Douglas DC-8-33

Hint 1:

The DC-8s came via merger.

Hint 2:

The carrier in question is the ONLY airline EVER to have operated 3 out of the 6
types above, AT THE SAME TIME.

I don't think Thai ever operated the 707? My second guess would be Middle East Airlines, but I can't recall ever seeing a DC-8 in their colors.

I would have said Air France as do remember seeing a pic of a CV-990 in all bare metal and Air France livery.

The DC-8-33 via merger is the hang up... Air Afrique/UTA had em but UTA only merged with Air France sometime in the late 80's/early 90's i think. But 60's time line and AT THE SAME TIME fits...

VARIG indeed operated DC-8-32/33s for a time during the 1960s. VARIG's '8s came by way of a merger with Panair do Brasil in 1965, while the '990s came from a ~1962 merger with REAL. Also inherited with the mergers were Panair's routes to Europe and REAL's routes to Miami, Mexico City, Los Angeles and Tokyo. Panair (an affiliate of Pan Am) had been the largest airline in Latin America with REAL a close second...while VARIG was no small obscure airline before the mergers, in light of their history as Brasil's largest-by-far dominant airline from 1965 until the early-2000s, it is easily overlooked that they were, at one time, the nation's third largest airline.

VARIG may well also be the only airline ever to operate DC-8s, 707s and CV-990s simultaneously. According to a timetable dated 1968, VARIG was flying all three 4-engine jetliner types to the U.S. during the Summer schedule: DC-8s to Los Angeles, 707s to New York, and CV-990s to Miami. Prior to VARIG's acquisitions of REAL and Panair, their only route outside of South America had been to New York

So, VARIG is indeed a (or the) correct answer to the original question (the Caravelles were their own as well as ex-Panair, L-188s, RR Conway-powered 707-441s, and P&W-powrered 707-341Cs were entirely VARIG) ...it would seem highly unlikely that any other airline could also be a correct answer.

So VARIG it is! Just a matter of having a basic grasp of the history of Latin America's major airlines...of which VARIG's is one of the more interesting...a great airline with a sad ending...even if the name has survived, for all intents, the real VARIG is no more.
