Hello, I have a paint question.

Can I spray enamel (Xtracolor) over Krylon Gloss Black paint.

Thanks in advance.

People seem to have a lot of trouble with incompatible paints. I've been mixing and matching for eons and have never had a problem. I think the issue stems from not letting paints cure well enough. The answer to your question is "yes", but be sure what's underneath is well and truly dry, and don't flood anything over the top of it.

Well... it might depend on what you thin the Xtracolor with. If you use lacquer thinner, all bets are off. Krylon has changed its formula too many times in the past few years to know what is safe to use over it. Mineral spirits as a thinner should be safe, and possibly naptha. I suggest a test.

True dat. I don't think I'd be spraying naphtha if I were fond of my liver though...

A fast paint question (again). What Xtra color are planning to paint over the Krylon? Want to know when paint is TRULY dried? Give it a smell. If you can still smell it, it aint dried.

Models, try 'em..........

Thanks for the replies. The paint that will now go on top of the Krylon Black is Humbrol Enamel Red. I will definitely test it out before I do it on the actual model. The model is a Revell 727-100 in the Avianca older red top and aluminum bottom fuselage, I was thinking of giving the whole model a spray of the krylon black, doing the red top after that, and then working on the bottom half with Alclad.
I will test it out first and report results.

Thanks,
Luis

Adding my .02......

Careful what color you use under the red. White is the best primer/undercoat for any bright (red) colors. If you paint red over gray or black likely it won't turn out so good. I've a model where I sprayed bright red over white and gray parts. The red on the white looks great, over the gray not so good or bright.

And just a warning about mixing different paint brands. Things might look good right after painting but no so good days/weeks/months later.

As mentioned above the "sniff" test is good to determine if paint is truly dry but to be 100% sure I'd hesitate mixing different paint brands.

Thanks Ken, I totally agree. The red will probably look different with black underneath. I’m looking at an Avianca 727-200 (red wave colors) in which I painted the red over Tamiya white primer and it still looks nice and bright.
I will forget the idea of the red over the black, and keep it as it is. The red will go on top of the Tamiya White primer then do the lower fuselaje with the Krylon black, then Alclad like I have done in previous models. What was I thinking.....modeller’s mental block I guess.

Thanks to all,
Luis
