Deutsche Lufthansa was the last airline to order the graceful Lockheed 1649A "Starliner" on May 24, 1956. The 4 were delivered in September 1957 and were used solely for 2 years on the North Atlantic routes from Germany to New York. In 1959, a "Senator" de-luxe service was started in a 36 seat configuration (instead of the normal 64-84). By 1960, 2 (including D-ALAN above) were converted to Freighters and all 4 were leased to World Airways for 18 months. Upon return, the 2 passenger 1649A's were sold and the 2 freighters were re-fitted as passenger A/C and used for 1 year on the "Air Bus" route from Frankfurt to Hamburg. Both 1649A's were re-painted in the 1964-65 707 color scheme during their last year for Lufthansa. By the end of 1965, the Lufthansa "Starliners" were gone...... John3

How the industry has changed since the years during which L-1649As served with Lufthansa ...today's counterpart might be something like Lufthansa's 747-400s being displaced by A380s on longhaul routes, with the 747s being re-assigned to the ~1 hour FRA-HAM service or similar German domestic route(s), none of which, afaik, has a duration in excess of ~90 minutes. What are the chances of that ever happening??? Such drastic role changes for long range pistonliners regularly occurred as they were replaced in prime longhaul services by jet-powered types, in some cases after only a few years of operating airlines' "prestige" services. Hi everybody, for those who didn't knew already: One Lufthansa Starliner will fly again ... restoration is on its way and perfectly done. More you can read on this website: http://www.lufthansa-ju52.de/en/Projects/Lockheed-Superstar/index.php It's very interesting and I just spent more than two hours staring at this website and being fascinated by this giant project. But it's true and I'm very lucky that I might have the chance in future to have a flight on this plane. :-) Michael |
