Hi there,

Was looking at reference pictures for a 747-300 I'm attempting to build and came across something unusual, at least to me.

In this shot of PH-BUW in 1987, door L3 is clearly outlined and visible:
KLM 1987

However, as we get into 1991, same door is non-outlined:
KLM 1991

...and same up until near her retirement:
KLM 2000

I checked the other side as well and it is indeed not outlined either. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

In progress:

Not really got any difinitive answer, but in the first photo although the L3 door is marked the L4 and L5 doors aren't marked.

Can only suggest there is a different internal arragement that compromises that L3 and R3 door

and I note that it's still the same arrangement when painted in Surinam colours

By the aft cargo door I'm guessing it's in a -combi configuration. If so then the reduced passenger capacity wouldn't necessitate the same amount of exits as a full pax version does. Likely that door was deactivated, and therefore is not required to be externally marked as such.

The same was on BA's 747-136: The L3 doors were not outlined anymore later on.
BA placed additional seats at L3 /R3 doors (same as regular overwing emergency exits on narrow boddies).
Maybe this was the reason for non-outlined doors?

L3/R3 doors are not equipped as emergency exits on 747s, so presumably don't have to be outlined - details at Exits
