I have just opened the Airfix B747 getting ready to build as Ray at Twosix has issued Qantas scheme. I notice, however, a gorge around the engine cowling about 3mm across. Anybody know what this is all about? A manufacturing error perhaps. Also, are there any replacement engines on the market. I have found some in 1/200 but not 1/144. I suppose I could fill in the gorge - is that the answer?

Any suggestions welcome.

No, it's not a 'manufacturing error' - it's part of the tooling. The Airfix kit only vaguely resembles an actual 747. The kit was tooled before there was such a thing as an actual 747 (yes, it's *that* old). The kit most closely resembles an early artists conception of what the 747 was supposed to look like.

If you're doing an early 747-100 with PW engines, the engines (bad as they are) from the much superior Revell kit are about your only choice. But in that case you might as well toss the Airfix kit in the bin and just build the Revell kit.

IIRC that was supposed to represent the open thrust reverse rings.

That is correct. When the Airfix team took pictures and did their measurements, the engine was on a stand, and the only way to get it to fit on the stand was to have the reversers in the deployed position. Thus, they cast the engines as such, never even thinking how it might look with the reverser doors in the closed position.

The Airfix team took pictures and measurements? And still they came up with that monstrosity? I find that hard to believe.

Re: The Airfix 747.....

Once you've filled in the thrust reverser "slots" on the engines you are then ready to thin the 2x? too thick vertical fin and add the fuselage wing root fairings as well

The Revell 747-100 kit is a much better choice but the Airfix kit is still quite a bit better than the Doyusha monstrosity. In both the Airfix and Doyusha kit's defense if you build one nobody will mistake them for anything other than a 747.

Yeah, it was hard for me to swallow at first too, but it would explain why the wing to body fairing is missing if they photographed the first one while it was under construction since the engines are installed on the assembly line with the reversers deployed and the wing to body fairing is one of the last things to be installed after all of the plumbing and ducting is installed in the wing and the center section fuel tank. If they had waited a few more weeks or months they might have turned out a much better kit.

The Airfix and Aurora kits complemented each other. Both were horror shows. However.............

Since you have the kit and are going to build it, if you manage to turn out a nice model from it, we will all admire your patience as well as your skills!

I agree with Ken -- This Airfix kit is clearly a 747 and nobody will ever mistake it for anything else. Enjoy building it!

Take care,
Kurt

Yes, you can make a great model out of it.
This one below was built by Humberto Akira, in my opinion, "the" best airliner modeler in Brazil currently.
Check that out - and believe me: it's an Airfix!

Guys, thanks for all your comments. Getting a Revell kit seems difficult; I have not seen one for a long time now, anywhere. So, I'll have a go at the Airfix kit. I am not one who is gravely concerned about wing chord measurements etc. To me, if the model looks 'like' what its supposed to be, then I'm happy. Admittedly, there are better representations of airliners through other model manufacturers, nevertheless, I will continue to make as wide selection as is available, but at this juncture Ray's decals are on their way and I will make the Airfix kit. If it turns out to be half as good as the Dragonair pictured above, I'll be happy.

Back to the bench now then.........

The DragonAir 747 is amazing.....Looks like he not only added the wing/fuselage fairings but also extended the upper deck. Sure doesn't look the like the "stock Airfix" deck.

Yes, Ken! He did a little lengthening on the upper deck as well!

He also had this KLM Cargo 744 which he opened up the nose cargo door, I'll look up for such pics.

Seeing Akira's birds on model shows is a treat, however, no medals are left for us mortals!

Jokes apart, he's a great guy!

You might want to try Welsh models and see if they'll sell you a set of engines for your 747.

If it has wings I can crash it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I certainly did. Welsh Models are sending me some sets of resin engines and accompanying undercarriage in the post now. Fantastic ending. Thanks 47 Driver.
