I use a base like this, made from carboard to hold the model while I'm painting it, working on it, etc. You can put toothpicks, glued, in the right positon, in the landing gear bays, to hold the model in position. This way you avoid touching the model.

I use this display case to display my models. It is dust-proof and keeps the kids out. As you can see some of my models need engines.
