Hi folks, I'm very interested to use Boeing's archives library @ KBFI but I don't know if it's open to public?? Any info would be appreciated. |

I know at least two members here have had dealings with the Boeing archives, so I will defer to them for detailed information. Be that as it may, you may find it worth your while to contact the archives directly, at the curator's e-mail address found on this page: http://www.museumofflight.org/Collections-and-Research/Archives I've done archival research (though not with Boeing) and have found an e-mail to an archive's staff, introducing myself and specifying what I'm interested in researching and asking about access, will help plan a research visit and also will help them have things ready if a visit can be arranged.. And if you can't arrange a visit, you may be able to work with them on getting copies of what you need. Archive staffs generally want to work with researchers, unless they're overworked or there are restrictions on materials, and I've found a polite inquiry can work wonders and occasionally works a miracle. Good luck! Jodie Peeler In 1924 Wien was Alaska's first airline. In 1980 it still is. |

If you have a legitimate research need, you can get in there. They're not "open to the public" if the idea is to simply go and paw through things until you find something you like. They're not set up for that (as the National Archives, for instance). But if you have a specific reason, they're happy to help you. It's actually in Bellevue, not KBFI, FWIW... |

Thank you Jodie and Jennings for your information. Jennings, for example will they allow me in if I want to research a particular subject like Cathay Pacific B-744 photos for the purpose of building a model or someone who needs info on B-744 to write a book??

I don’t think if it’s just for personal reasons like you want to build a model that you’re going to have any luck. It’s a very small office with limited resources. I can tell you for certain that you’re not going to get anything like paint shop diagrams, if that’s what you’re thinking. That stuff is *very* closely controlled. Nowadays, if a Boeing employee even accesses that information on the company intranet, and they don’t have a specific job-related reason for doing so, it’s a firable offense.

I'd start with the MoF archives, they have plenty of content. As Jennings said, you probably won't get paint chips or anything like that, if you're looking for period pictures you should be able to get that in the MoF. When are you planning to be there? The Boeing archive folks will want a reason for you showing up, and building a model will probably not be regarded as legitimate. The team there is really friendly though. |

Maybe Cathay Pacific can help.
Linjeflyg(SE) CV440 Metropolitan and AeBal B717 would be very nice! |

If you just want to build a model, you're going to find as much information freely available online as you will at Boeing. Almost every corporate logo is easily available (often as a vector art file), and there are literally millions of often really high quality photos free for the downloading.
