      Hi,

I'm currently modelling the DC-8-62 by Authentic Airliners. Before attaching the landing gears I'd like to know which colour was applied to the wheel wells. The same question goes for the inner side of the landing gear doors. Was it the same aluminium color all over or maybe a whiter shade?

Depends pretty much on what you prefer, unless you are researching a particular airplane to model, to which you should paint them as the actual airplane. The Minicraft kits instruct to paint the wheel wells aluminum, but I have actually seen some DC-8s with white, aluminum, or even light gray. Sometimes its kind of hard to tell since they are so dirty.

Sorry I don't have a definite answer for you. Maybe look through the Waddington DC-8 book etc. for some close up/detail photos. I agree with Challenger350Pilot that the original color will be hard to tell because dirt/fluid will mix and create a "unique" color for wheel well. The questions reminds me of a great Rick Drury modeler quote from his Secret War book about flying Skyraiders in Southeast Asia. He'd given an exciting presentation about his mission and aircraft and asked the audience for questions. First question from the audience which must have been from a modeler was: What color were the wheel wells of your plane? :-)

Hi I photographed VP-BHM DC-8-62 ex United in Sept 2007 at Malmo Sweden and the inside of the main wheel bay doors were very pale gray.
      Hope this helps.

My faulty memory seems to recall the Delta DC-8s that I worked around had light gray similar to what proplineruk mentioned. Mind you this was the mid-1980s and I was more involved with dumping lavs and loading bags at the time...
