As spare part donor for SOFIA N747NA to keep them flight beyond 2030.

I spotted VP-BAT in Service, 2015.

P4-FSH belongs to the Rev. Ernest Angley, who named it "Star Triple Seven" for some reason, and was using it for mission trips to Africa up until it contracted a landing gear issue last year. The fix would reportedly require having a part specially manufactured that's specific to the SP, and they don't have the money for that (and please, folks, let's not turn this into a subthread about televangelists in general or Angley in particular; there's plenty other places you can do that, so let's not do that here). The last I read they were having someone run the engines every now and again. I wouldn't be surprised if it became a parts source for N747NA soon.

My understanding is that SP's have a unique version of the JT9 that is no longer being overhauled so engines have become a limiting factor for SOFIA and any other SP. Nasa bought the Frys SP not that long ago. The plane was first offered to Nasa and they turned it down. It first sold to a different company and not much later Nasa did purchase it.

When American acquired their 2 SPs, former TWA birds, I remember Clint talking about how they had less range than other SPs because TWA chose the weaker engines for commonality's sake. TWA wanted the same engines as all other 747s in the fleet at the time. So there must be some variations out there.

There was no visible external difference between any of the JT9Ds fitted to the 747SP (or the -100/200/300). Differences were all internal. The first 747SP prototype originally flew with the old style outboard pylons, but they were converted to the later cranked style before she was delivered to Pan Am.
